School Holiday Summer Fun for Kids and Families in Byron Bay and Beyond!

Who else has been flat out like a lizard drinking? Far out, has it been hectic in the lead up to Christmas or what?  Is it really like this every year or does this year feel particularly manic to you?

I mean I am an organised person. I have pretty much sorted all my Chrissy gifts before December so there’s no stress on that front…

But seriously, there’s like a million school or preschool events, then add those to the after school end of year shows and celebrations. 🏃‍♀️😓

And that’s not even including work do’s and partner’s work do’s…Holy Moly – it’s no wonder they call it the silly season! 🤪

Well, if you’ve been thoroughly caught up in this, now is the time for you to take a breath.. & repeat with lots of relaxing ones because in terms of school holiday activities and fun – we’ve got it sorted for you.  💛🌻

Byron Bay Skateboard School are once again offering their legendary School Holiday Skate Day Camp and there are  2 options but be quick these SELL OUT FAST!

OPTION 1 – 15, 16 & 17 Jan 2019  WAREHOUSE DAY CAMP
OPTION 2 – 22, 23 & 24 Jan 2019  SKATEPARK TOUR DAY CAMP 

Either option is a great way to meet some new friends that share the same passion and improve your skateboarding skills.  Suitable for kids aged 7 to 12 years.

Dance Lab AU are holding their fantastic annual 2-Day Summer Workshop for ages  7 – 12  on 7 & 8 Jan and for ages 13-20 on 9 &10 Jan with featured teachers including Michael Braun, Aleisha Bauer. These workshops offer all styles, genres and facets of dance and places are limited.

Circus Arts is a fully equipped indoor space offering a range of unique activities from kinder to thrill-seeking teens (and adults too!) Try Flying trapeze, Climbing wall, Circus skills, Aerial Skills, Parkour, Kinder & Pre-circus  to name a few and…

further to popular demand they’ve included their exciting  Ninja Play  classes as an add on to their 1/2 & full day school holiday programs.

if your little one isn’t quite ready to try there’s always the fantastic playspace for littlies to have fun while you can sit back and enjoy healthy snacks & a cuppa from the onsite cafe.

Spaghetti Circus in Mullumbimby also offer half and full day Circus Programs and provide foundation training in aerials, tumbling, acro-balance, mini-tramp, juggling, hula hoops and much more! There are Full Day Workshops for 7-14 year olds, and Half Day Junior Workshops for 4-6 year olds. They are also offering pre-Christmas workshops this year! We love to spend a day of the school holidays at  Summerland House Farm Here you can enjoy a round of mini golf, have fun on the Farm Tractor tour then relax with a picnic in the parklands and cool off in the fun water spray park! You can also delight in local produce at their grocers and find all kinds of souvenirs in their gift shop. It’s a lovely way to spend a morning or afternoon with the kids and it is on our list!

Stinking hot and need a cool environment to enjoy some fun with the kids or perhaps it’s raining and everyone has cabin fever…
Ballina Tenpin Bowling are open almost every day of the school holidays and are the perfect all-weather all-ages family fun option and they have a school holiday special price of just $15 per person for 2 games!
They also light up the lanes between 12 and 4pm and from 7pm onwards for GLOW bowling sessions every day of the holidays!

Or how about getting down and dirty at The Farm Byron Bay! Farm Kids is holding a number of their fabulous hands-on 3 hour workshops for kids with their exciting themed farm animal or produce sessions. Also on offer is their Farm Kids Mini Farmers Program! Suitable for 7-15 y/o, this full day program introduces children to real life farming. They get their hands dirty and work alongside real farmers.



If your child is feeling creative, there are some awesome craft workshops which have been added to our Calendar of Events – a number of which are FREE.

Bright Sparks are putting on some fantastic FREE Environmentally-Themed Kids School Holiday craft workshops on Wednesday 23 January with DEEP SEA CREATURES highlighting the plastic plight of our oceans & INSECT HOTEL detailing how we can offer shelter to insects in our garden using re-purposed materials.

Ballina Fair have teamed up with KidzKlub this holidays to offer some FREE Summer-inspired Craft Fun plus Sand Wizard outside Target  – check the What’s On Guide for dates and times.

There are some fabulous FREE craft sessions and activities being offered by the local libraries:  Lennox Head Byron Bay.  Ballina Library,  Brunswick Heads, Mullumbimby & Alstonville

Byron Theatre

Junkyard Beats – Have one show only on Saturday 5 February and tix are selling fast! In the hands of Junkyard Beats, ordinary household items are transformed into extraordinary musical instruments and unwanted junk comes alive in exciting and surprising ways. Suitable for ages 3+

The gorgeous Trinket The Robot will be on stage on the 8 & 9 Jan and  Puppetry Of Paper holiday workshop is on 9 Jan where you can join Little Wing Puppets to make a paper puppet and bring it to life, as a team.

Ballina RSL

Imaginitis with Shorty Brown –  Hands up who loves Shorty Brown!! Well, she’s back this school holidays with ONE SHOW ONLY  of  Imaginitis at Ballina RSL this school holidays. This show sold out last school holidays at Byron Theatre – my kids and I managed to get tix and they had an absolute ball!

HOTA – Home of The Arts on the Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise)

have fantastic week of fun lined up for kids and families with FREE and paid for events &  workshops  as part of their KIDS TAKE OVER  week from 12 – 19 January.  Activities include Glam Your Guitar, Regurgitator, the amazing 360 All Stars Circus and the Family Movie School Of Rock.  Details and booking info for all these events can be found on our What’s On Guide

It’s also worth noting that around the back of the building is Evandale Parklands. There’s a swimming lagoon with sandy beach, ample picnic areas with barbecues, plenty of shade under trees and a great fully fenced kids playground with two separate slides and climbing spaces (all underneath a shade sail). The toilet & shower amenities are second to none too! We went to see a morning show at HOTA during the last summer holidays in January and spent a lovely afternoon at the lagoon with a picnic.

Brunswick Picture House has also got a great line-up of family fun events happening this school holidays.

The Biggest Little Magicians!  Well, we had our fingers crossed that these guys were back for the school holidays and we are stoked to reveal they have 3 shows at Brunswick Picture House.  Last school hols my kids jagged front row seats in the packed out theatre and without a doubt everyone was enthralled, amused and totally blown away by how awesome the 3 magicians were! WOW WOW WOW!

Super Amazing Giant GirlBigger than the Big Pineapple, stronger than super-glue, and cooler than an ice-cream in the Arctic! Action-packed and interactive, this spectacular theatre show for all little strongwomen and men combines thrilling circus, absurd comedy and ingenious physical theatre. There are 5 shows from 15-19 Jan of this all-ages show.

Mr Gørski is…. ON THE RUNCurrently touring Australia and the world with his new show for kids, ‘Mr.Gørski’ is… ON THE RUN for being too entertaining! Catch him between the 22 – 26 January at the Brunswick Picture House!


Cherry Street Sports are holding their Little Cherries Christmas Disco on 22 December and their summer school holiday one on 19 January. Come on down  and party on the back deck with DJ Mitchy Witchy, & Miss Beka! There are prizes to be won, and plenty of dancing, singing & fun to be had!

They also offer All Day Thursdays where not only do Kids Eat Free (*conditions apply) with the purchase of any main meal, there’s also a Thursday Night Character Visits at 6.30pm on the 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th January AND  it’s also Dance Crew night from 6pm  on Thursdays –  Free for boys and girls of all ages!

AND on Saturday 12 & Sunday 13 it’s  Waterslide Weekend at Cherry Street Sports!

On 8 Jan Club Lennox are holding their FREE Under The Sea themed kids disco and on Monday 7, 14 & 21 Jan Club Lennox invite you along to Monday Funday – an action packed afternoon for the kids.

There will be kids bingo at $2 per child from 1-3pm with lots of prizes to be won then free kids facepainting from 3-5pm and a kids zone from 5-7pm where kids also eat free *conditions apply.


Spend a day or two in Brunswick Heads this school holidays. We will be for sure!


There’s the simply delightful Fairy Trail (map of clues can also be found in Brunswick Heads Visitors Centre), where you can also stop by the river or cool off at  beautiful swimming beach at Torakina. Combine this with a show at  Brunswick Picture House  rounded off with a visit to the longstanding annual McGregor’s Family Carnival for amusement park rides and games plus some hot chippies and your family friendly fun day is made!

In Ballina, Australian Seabird Rescue are holding their weekday school holiday tours. Learn about seabird and sea turtle rescue, rehabilitation and release. The tour goes for approximately one hour and costs just $7 (CASH ONLY) per person. No booking required – just turn up on the day!

Have fun with Gabriel Otu at his Children’s African Drum, Dance and Storytelling Workshop at Byron Theatre during the holidays. Including drumming, dancing and storytelling of the lifestyle in Ghana, West Africa. Gabriel brings all the instruments and everyone has the opportunity to participate, learn new skills and share their unique rhythm. Suitable for ages 2+.

Peggy Popart Kids Tour & Art Activity – Would you like a fun tour of current exhibitions at the Lismore Art Gallery plus the bonus of an art activity? This tour is the perfect fun and factual way to see the gallery. These tours are on every second Sunday of the month from 11.30am to 12.30pm and best of all, it’s free and there are no bookings required.

Or how about a special trip on the world’s first solar powered train – right here in Byron Bay. My kids were thrilled to recently take a trip on the train with their grandparents who were visiting from overseas last month. You can tie it in with lunch at The Sun Bistro which has an indoor play area as well as a lovely fenced and grassy outdoor area out the back.
