Summer School Holiday Family Fun In Byron Bay and Beyond!

Love it or hate it 6 weeks of School Holidays have arrived!!!

Now, I’m sure that many of you will have family stuff happening over Christmas Week but I can tell you that there are some lovely family friendly events and activities happening in the lead up to Chrissy and of course there are absolutely heaps of things to do once we hit the New Year!

So, with this mind; whether you are a holiday-maker or lucky enough to live here; Byron4Kids aim is to be a super handy family friendly resource to provide you with ideas and inspiration to make the most of the summer holidays!

Once again there are some exciting new additions to the Calendar of Events this school holidays and with some days boasting over 15 different activities, events and workshops … I can almost guarantee you won’t be stuck for things to do with the kids!


Want to get wet?

Discovery Parks Byron Bay now boasts one of the largest waterparks in any Australian caravan park! Not only that, but they are offering (depending on daily capacity) family day passes and discounts for large groups & kids parties! For more details; click here!

The kids can have a ball on the inflatable obstacle course at Mullumbimby Pool which is open 7 days a week between 11am and 2pm (weather permitting) during  the Christmas School Holidays and Ballina Pool’s Waterslide is open from 10am to 4pm every day offering two waterslides – a shorter slide for a gentle ride, and a longer faster slide for the waterslide enthusiast which also has spectacular views of the adjacent Richmond River as you make your ascent!

Kicking back on our beaches

From Broken Head to  Brunswick Heads;  Byron Shire boasts some of the most beautiful beaches along NSW Far North Coast. As too does Ballina Shire which also includes the one of the most famous, filmed and photographed surfing beaches, world renowned The Point at Lennox Head. lists all of the ‘patrolled’ beaches in both Byron and Ballina Shires complete with up-to-date Lifesaver Patrol information, as well as your handy to know guide containing details of nearby amenities and playgrounds, stroller friendly pathways, which are the dog friendly beaches or if you can grab a snack close by.


School Holiday Activities

Bricks4Kidz are back with their awesome special feature school holiday LEGO workshops at the Cavanbah Centre. There’s one before Christmas ‘Despicable Christmas!’ and one after Christmas ‘Bat League’  and another in Ocean Shores ‘Space Adventures – The Brick Awakens!’

School Holiday Activities In Byron Bay and Beyond

Here’s a lovely workshop that I’m looking to get as a Christmas gift for my daughter. A nature and art based school holiday program for children aged 7-13. Activities include meeting the horses, leading, grooming and general care of horses and ponies. Problem solving and obstacle courses involving horses. Supervised riding where appropriate. Painting, sculpting and camp-fire cooking. Never mind my daughter… where’s the one for adults!!

For teenage girls, another lovely new addition is a Girl Wisdom workshop. A beautiful, nurturing day for teen girls to come together and celebrate themselves! The day focuses on supporting each girl in a safe, supportive, positive and uplifting atmosphere.

Not to be left out are some fabulous craft creations to be made with FREE activities at the local libraries including ‘Scraffito’ and ‘Marble Run Fun’ at Byron Bay, and  ‘Making Paper Planes’ and a fantastic  ‘Claymation’ workshop  where kids can have fun creating figurines like Wallace and Grommit. On at Lennox Head, Ballina and Brunswick Heads Libraries.

Other FREE activities, events  and workshops throughout the school holidays include daily Art and Craft fun with KidzKlub at Ballina Fair and free DIY workshops at both Byron and Ballina Bunnings.

If your child is feeling creative, there are some fantastic crafty workshops being held by Children’s Studio for Visual Arts for children age 4+ where children spend up to 3 hours immersed in artistic creativity.  Classes range mosaic making to Crazy Science at The Park! Dance more their thang?

Dance Dynamics and Dance Lab AU are both holding 3 day school holiday dance workshops with their own and special guest teachers including Sher Manu – choreographer from So You Think You Can Dance!

The Farm Byron Bay is holding a number of hands-on 3 hour workshops for kids with their exciting themed workshops focused on Pigs and Cows, Medicinal Herbs, Planting, Chooks and Bee Fun. The children are taken on an educational and fun tour of The Farm where they are educated about the pigs, bees, chickens, flower crops, herb garden, orchard and veggie crops. The children get up close and personal with chickens, collect eggs, pick and taste veggies, edible flowers and herbs.

In terms of shows, ’tis the season for it, that’s for sure! Some great live entertainment for kids is on at Byron Theatre with ‘Arr We There Yet’ a swashbuckling family circus show with an amazing pirate acrobatic performance.  ‘ Fluff: A Story of Lost Toys’ is a simple, joyful and humorous tale acclaimed for its originality, warmth, clever use of comedy and extraordinary combination of song, movement, sampling, projection and audience participation. Suitable for Ages 3+

The Brunswick Picture House is presenting  the kids show ‘How To Be A Rockstar’. From invisible hula-hooping to crumping, Tessa Waters celebrates the ridiculousness of the human form, getting laughs from waggling whatever body parts the kids suggest. To the same end, there is, of course, also a section on farts, that ever-faithful staple of any children’s comedy show. There’s heaps more to come so keep an eye on the Calendar of Events as new shows are being added daily!

Plus the Pighouse Flicks Lounge Cinema in Byron is putting on some great kids movies this holidays including Trolls, Moana, Ballerina and Fantastic Beasts and where to find them.

Club Lennox has organised a fun kids disco event and kids bingo, Cherry St Sports is holding a free Little Cherries Club Disco and Byron Bay Services Club has a free, fully supervised dedicated kids lounge with creative crafts, colouring, games and movies.

Looking for half or full day activities?

A recent and very popular addition to the full day activities is the Brunswick Bush School Holiday Program. They have a range of activities on offer over throughout January including: canoeing, bush walking, animal tracking, making fire, shelter making, weaving, whittling, bush food identification, clay work, interspersed with games, songs, stories and sacred circles.

Another welcome new addition is KidzKlub half day (afternoon) school holiday program in the centre of town at Byron Bay Community Centre.  With areas for art and craft, drama, sports and games; the kids can play freely and creatively in each area with the fabulous equipment and materials or join in with structured sessions facilitated by qualified staff.

KidzKlub are also putting on their regular half and full day sessions at the Lennox Cultural and Community Centre, Spaghetti Circus in Mullumbimby have half and full day Circus Programs which sell out fast so get your name down quick! And Ballina Gymnastics offer half day classes which are open to all – so if you want to try – this is the ideal opportunity!

 Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreation is running its awesome day camp for 7 to 12 year olds and Byron Bay Skate Board School is offering 5 days of its hugely popular School Holiday Skate Camp!

And what is a school holiday without a trip to the Macadamia Castle and the Crystal Castle? Both of which have exciting recent additions to their already wonderful attractions! The Macadamia Castle has a new Koala enclosure and offers 2 fantastic, hands-on school holiday options:  Be a Keeper for a Day or a Wildlife Guardian.

Crystal Castle is now home to the World’s Biggest Crystals! Come and see these awesome earthly treasures and be amazed!  Stand between the enormous Crystal Guardians or be immersed in the Magic and Wonder of the Enchanted Cave. Children can be delighted with the sparkle of thousands of crystals, play with Fireheart the Dragon in the Playground, and have their faces painted for FREE from 12 – 4pm everyday of the holidays.
