Are you and the family heading up to Minyon Falls or for a bite to eat at Federal Doma Sushi or perhaps to a local waterhole this weekend? Why not drop by the Bush Tucker Garden at the rear of Federal Community Children’s Centre.

A project conceived by local mum, Rachel Heaton, the garden showcases a passion for indigenous food and education with native leaves for spice, young roots, new shoots, native rosella, edible flowers, berries, fruits, nuts and leaves for wrapping food and even weaving for functional items like bags, baskets, jewellery and kitchen items. It is a short, 15-30 minute stroll with easy to read and informative signage.

The local Hiking Mums group recently toured the garden with Rachel, exploring the lush aromatics of Cinnamon Myrtle; as well as examples of the aniseed and lemon myrtle varieties, native ginger, sandpaper fig, small leaved tamarind, Bangalow palm, walking stick palm, blue flax lily, riberry, blue tongue, rose myrtle, native rosella, white aspen, lemon scented tea tree, native tamarind, peanut tree, native mulberry, mat rush, midyim berry, brush cherry, black apple, whalebone, bolwarra, geebung, plum pine, blue lilly pilly, davidson plums, grass tree, maca nuts, and a large variety of wattles and banksias.
“My kids and I visited this garden once over the summer break. I couldn’t believe that ever since, they can actually identify ‘bush tucker’ foods when we are out walking” says Byron Bay mum of four and member of Hiking Mums, Bridie O’Connor.

This amazing resource for the Northern Rivers community is an opportunity that every family should take up to learn more about our indigenous foods in the area. A detailed book is also available for purchase from the Community Centre.

The garden is open to the public all year round for no charge and tours can be arranged through the Children’s Centre. Friendly to all ages.
